The Non-Tech Person's Guide To Using Technology In The Classroom

I think a lot of teachers at my school don’t try to use technology in the classroom because they aren’t 100% confident with it. Ask lots of questions beforehand, but try it even if you are still nervous- a lot of times, you won’t find out the pros and cons, kinks and bugs until you try it out. The school year is barely over and I can already feel the anxiety that new teachers are feeling for the fall. A lot of their stress revolves around how to successfully integrate technology into their classrooms. While I wouldn’t necessarily make this my primary concern, I thought it would ease some minds if I offered a few thoughts on the topic.

Be ok with a messy process the first time through
I do think I’ve ever used a tech tool in a lesson plan where there wasn’t some kind of glitch or another. Like with anything new, you and your students won’t have a process established yet, so of course there are going to be a few glitches. Embrace the fact it isn’t going to perfect and don’t let it throw you off your game.

Don’t feel like you have to be an expert in order to use a tool
Don’t wait to use a tool until you are an expert in it. For the most part, I’ve found that anyone younger that I am is a bigger risk taker when it comes to tech tools. As long as you give your students time to explore a tool and encourage risk taking, they’ll figure out how to use it in no time.

Ask for help
There are probably more ed-tech people on Twitter than any other category. Most of them are more than willing to answer your questions. Don’t be afraid of looking stupid. Ask your question and get on with things.

Have a definite reason for choosing a certain technology
You should know why you are using a certain tool and the reason should be good. If a piece of butcher paper and magic markers can get the job done better and faster, use that. There’s no prize for using the most tech in your room.

Debrief the experience with your students
Ask your students about their experience using the tool. Don’t be afraid to let them shoot down the tool’s usefulness. Remember their not judging you, their evaluating the tool.

Sketchn’ Guess Lite Available only on the iPad this app capitalizes on the larger screen size for game play. Players divide into two teams and try to gain the most points by guessing their team’s themes the fastest.  Features include a timer, score sheet, “Sketchn’ Guess” cards and several colored pencil choices for sketching in an easy to navigate format that allows for self directed play. Recommended for late elementary students and up.

fotobabble Great for an art critique or personal reflection, this simple app allows you to record and attach audio to a photo. Saved content can be posted publicly or privately accessible on the fotobabble website.

Art & Music If you enjoy integrating music into your curriculum, this is the app for you.  This app matches up music and art from corresponding time periods, ranging from Russian to the Classical West. (not iPad compatible)

Apps for Art History

MoMA AB EX NY Experience 200 Abstract Expressionist paintings all housed by the MOMA. Beautiful images of art that can be enlarged and displayed with additional information. The iPad app includes a selection of videos featuring comments by the curators, artist painting techniques  and art terms in action. My favorite video is The Painting Techniques of Jackson Pollack: One: November 31, 1950. There is also an interactive map and Art Terms glossary.

SmartHistory The closest you can get to Italy from home, this app gives an amazing virtual art history tour through Rome using various multimedia including video and google map locations.

French Impressionism Showcasing artwork from the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago, this app is perfect for Impressionism lovers. View detailed video descriptions, gallery views, and biographies including Monet, Seurat, Ceznne, along with many others.

Honorable Mention

ArtPuzzle HD (iPad) / ArtPuzzle Lite ArtPuzzle HD is set in an art gallery that you virtually walk through and unscramble over 70 famous art masterpieces. The iPad app features classical music, four levels of difficulty, information about each painting and the ability to save the image to your photo gallery. ArtPuzzle Lite is compatible with iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch and offers many of the same features but, also has a quiz feature.

Art Start Created by an art teacher from Seattle, this idea generator can spark creativity in your students. Simply pressing the start button produces ideas for media, prompt, and color.

Apple’s iCloud Invading Classrooms Soon

WWDC Apple Keynote announced a new feature today: iCloud support built into the iOS 5 software update for all iOS device (iPod Touch, iPhone, iPad). The iCloud also integrates with existing iTunes desktop software on both Mac and PC platforms. Jonathan Seff at Macworld goes into details on the new  service:

Auto Backup

  • Once a day, iCloud will back up a lot of a user’s important content to the cloud over Wi-Fi. If you ever get a new phone, Apple said, type in your Apple ID and password and everything will be loaded on that phone automatically.
  • It will back up purchased music, apps, and books, your Camera Roll (photos and videos), device settings, and app data.

New Apps

  • Documents in the Cloud uploads Pages, Numbers, and Keynote documents to the cloud for syncing.
  • Photo Stream lets you take photos on any device and uploads them to sync with your other devices (for example, your iPhone shots appear on your iPad). Photo Stream also works with iPhoto on Mac, and supports the Apple TV as well. 
  • iTunes in the Cloud. For songs you’ve already purchased from the iTunes Store, there’s a Purchased button that shows your entire purchase history of songs (purchased on any device). You can view by all songs, recent songs, or by artist. You can then download any song or album with the touch of a button.
  • “This is the first time we’ve seen this in the music industry,” said Jobs. “No charge for multiple downloads on many devices.”

iTunes Match

  • Apple has come up with iTunes Match, a $25-a-year service that scans your iTunes library and tries to match it with the 18 million songs that Apple sells. For the songs that are in the iTunes Store, you get instant access, and Apple will even upgrade them to its standard 256-kbps AAC format. For those songs that Apple can’t identify, you can upload them manually

Specs and Availability 

  • Each user gets 5GB of free storage for mail, documents, and backup. Fortunately, purchased music, apps, books, and Photo Stream photos don’t count against that total.
  • iTunes Match costs $25 a year for unlimited storage.
  • iCloud will ship at the same time as iOS 5 in the fall, although developers can download a beta version now.

Apple Builds Twitter Into iOS 5

Apple announced built-in Twitter support in the upcoming iOS 5 release this fall. This support will enable easy tweeting, mentioning, retweeting, and sharing from your iPod Touch, iPhone, and iPad. Donald Melanson from Engadget elaborates: 

Apple’s just announced that it’s bringing deep Twitter integration to all of its iOS-based devices, and to many of its own apps, including Camera, Photos, Safari and Maps. That integration also, of course, extends to Contacts, where you’ll be able to link your contacts to their Twitter handle and keep their information updated accordingly, much like Android. You’ll also only have to sign into Twitter once (in Settings), and then simply share those credentials with any app that requests them.

Classroom iOS Devices Go ‘PC-Free’ This Fall!

WWDC Apple Keynote announced a new feature today: ’PC-Free’ support built into the iOS 5 software update for all iOS device (iPod Touch, iPhone, iPad). Finally, you can manage your classroom iOS devices with ease as Apple integrates over-the-air syncing and also over-the-air OS updates. Brian Heater at Engadget summarizes the announcement: 

Love your iPhone, but hate all of the PC-based tethering it entails? Apple has some good news: the company is taking its “post-PC” stance a step further, letting you activate your smartphone straight out of the box without syncing it to a computer. Also big news is the addition of over-the-air updates, which will let you receive changes without plugging the handset in. And some big news for music fans: users will be able to sync their iTunes libraries over WiFi connections with the update.

The 5 Coolest Things About Mac's Lion OSX

Lion will only be available in the App store, meaning you can’t install it with a disc. That also means that it’s easy to upgrade and update. Much like Snow Leopard, it’s only going to be $29.99. Unlike Snow Leopard, it’ll only take up 4 gb of hard drive space. Not bad. Some of our favorite new features: 

  • » Mission Control lets you see all the apps and other things your working on easily on your screen. It lets you preview apps and programs before you actually select them, and lets you easily select new Spaces.
  • » The Mac App Store will allow you to buy software easily from the Internet. It’s built in to Lion as well. It’s worth noting that the Mac App store has surpassed all other channels for buying PC software.
  • » Auto save allows you to easily revert your document to how it was when you opened it, rename it, duplicate it, and even see past revisions and copy-paste from them into your new one. It’s basically like a version of Google Docs on your desktop, but better. It’ll keep you from having multiple copies of the same document on your computer.
  • » Airdrop will replace your USB flash drives - it’s peer to peer sharing, but with documents. Again, seems like Google docs, but built in to the computer. Airdrop will show you everyone who is using it, all that you have to do is drag-drop the document in question on another user and it’s shared.
  • » Mail will be searchable, and it will show emails as conversations, just like Gmail if you’re familiar with it. Searching your email is extremely easy - you can search by sender, date, or subject, or all three in one search box. SOURCE
